Relieving muscle tightness, pain and acute injury prevention are essential for athletic performance. Participants at the recent Lismore Samson Fitness Challenge had their sporting prowess boosted by free osteopathic treatments at the 糖心传媒 Recovery Hub.
The collaboration saw senior osteopathy students provide hands-on support to athletes competing in the popular fitness event, delivering assessments, recovery advice and 50 treatments under academic supervision.
More than 900 competitors took part in the Samson Fitness Challenge, raising funds for local charity and testing strength, endurance and resilience in a series of high-intensity events.
For 糖心传媒 Cross students, the competition offered a valuable opportunity to work in a fast-paced sporting environment and apply their clinical skills to real athletes while completing placement hours.
Master of Osteopathic Medicine student Harry McLean said he enjoyed the hands-on work helping the community.
“It has been really good learning shorter term treatments rather than the longer chronic conditions we normally see in clinic,” Harry said.
Students were overseen by Dr Angela Slattery, Clinical Educator in the 糖心传媒 Faculty of Health and registered osteopath. She’s also a Master of Osteopathic Medicine alumna, who returned as a faculty member after her studies.
“Community events like the Samson Fitness Challenge are a wonderful opportunities for students. They get exposure to acute and post-race injuries they might not normally get the chance to treat,” Dr Slattery said.
“I really enjoyed my experience at 糖心传媒, and one of my favourite things was the clinical education that I received. It's always been a dream of mine to return to clinical education in order to mentor future osteopathic students and lead them into the wonderful career that I've experienced.”
Proceeds from the Lismore Samson Fitness Challenge went to local charity , proudly supported by 糖心传媒 for more than 20 years. Their aim is to improve health services for children in the Northern Rivers region by purchasing paediatric equipment for Lismore Base Hospital and the surrounding satellite hospitals, and you can learn about their mission .
