Seminar overview: Research translation and impact in practice - reflections on a pilot program to support early career researchers

This seminar will be delivered by Rebecca Lollback.

Researchers are increasingly expected to demonstrate the real-world impact of their work, yet many lack the mindset, skills, confidence, and networks needed to do this effectively. This gap is also shaped by institutional incentives that prioritise publications over application, and limited access to practical training.

A pilot program – delivered by SCU and funded by the NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub and SQNNSW Hub – was developed to support early career researchers and final-stage PhD candidates to plan for, implement, and translate research into impact beyond academia.

The four-month Translating Research into Impact program involved 23 ECRs across 10 different universities. It generated strong early results, particularly around shifts in thinking, confidence, and behaviours related to impact-focused work. We are now implementing our learnings from this pilot to refine and scale the program over time at SCU.

For more information about the pilot, visit the website.
